LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The village of Malanza, with 1,439 inhabitants, is in a costal zone where malaria is rampant. The major economic activity is fishing with an extremley low per capita income.

The Red Cross Society of STP and the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) jointly selected the village for this net distribution on the basis of it's extreme poverty and it's location in a high risk malaria area far away from the capital.

The nets will be distributed by a team composed of the technical staff of the NMCP, Red Cross volunteers and health agents operating in the area.

The distribution will start as soon as the nets are received. Where necessary, the team in the field will assist the population in installing the nets.
