LLINs What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)? An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide. The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'. more... Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed within the Island Division of Mombasa District in Coast Province.

This area is in the lowlands with a hot, wet climate. These conditions are conducive to mosquito breeding. The malaria case rate is high here with over 65% of morbidity (illness) and mortality, especially in infants, due to malaria. 50% of children who present with anaemia and convulsions in the hospitals are due to malaria.

Mombasa: The total number of registered HBC clients is 793. Under fives are about 27,150 and expectant mothers 28,960. The LLINs will be distributed to the 793 HIV positive people plus the most vulnerable under 5s and pregnant women based on vulnerability assessment by the trained community health workers.

The Kenya Red Cross is already implementing other programmes in this area so structures are in place for ease of LLIN distribution, follow up and monitoring.

Post-distribution information

1,496 nets have been successfully distributed in Mombasa by Red Cross staff and volunteers: 506 to Home Based Care (HBC) clients, 302 to children under 5, 183 to pregnant mothers and 505 to other vulnerable persons (OVC).Prior to the distribution, volunteers were given net hanging instruction and they in turn conducted health talks with recipients. Follow up will occur during routine home visits to ensure consistent and proper use of the nets. Beneficiaries will also be randomly selected to give feedback on their experience using the nets.
