LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Seven related distributions in the south east corner of Senegal around Kedougou will distribute 13,450 nets to achieve blanket coverage of the population in some 100 villages. The villages are in seven health districts with a combined population of 40,000. The communities and villages range in size from 20 to 2,800 people and on average are of 400 people.

Blanket coverage achieves maximum impact as this starves the mosquitoes of a blood meal and leads to the malaria-carrying mosquito population being dramatically reduced. The impact on the health of the local people can be, unsurprisingly, dramatic.

Locations

A distribution sometimes takes place in a number of locations. Each location may have its own pictures and video.

Survey status

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
