Distributed by Red Cross

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is a network of 183 National Societies worldwide. Our headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, from where we support members with technical, material, human, and financial support to better respond to emergencies and to major health problems.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Distributed by  Red Cross    Red Cross

The LLINs will be distributed in the villages of JiJiga and Gode.

The malaria mortality rate in children is high in these regions. 60% of reported visits to the health services are due to malaria.

Distribution will prioritize Persons Living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA) under our home based care program, pregnant women and <5 children. Identification of vulnerable pregnant mothers and under 5s will be done by trained volunteers.

The nets will be distributed by The Ethiopian Red Cross (ERC). Red Cross Volunteers will carry out the distribution as part of existing home based care (HBC) visits which means no additional distribution costs once the ERC receives the nets.

Locations

A distribution sometimes takes place in a number of locations. Each location may have its own pictures and video.

Survey status

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
