LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The nets will be distributed in Sega, a sub location in Ukwala Division, Siaya District of Nyanza Province.

Sega is in the lowlands with a hot wet climate. These conditions are conducive to mosquito breeding. The malaria case rate is high with over 65% of morbidity (illness) and mortality, especially in infants, due to malaria. 50% of children who present with anaemia and convulsions in the hospitals are due to malaria.

Sega: Distribution will focus on the 185 HIV infected people and the 1,440 pregnant women and 1,350 under 5 year olds covered by our home based care (HBC) programme. Other vulnerable people in the village will be identified by the volunteers in consultation with the community committee.
