United Nations Children's Fund
UNICEF
UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working specifically for children.
We work with local communities and governments in 155 countries, areas and territories, to provide emergency
relief and run long-term development programmes in areas such as health, education
and child protection.
Malaria and net distribution
Malaria is the biggest child-killer in African countries, yet the simple provision
of mosquito nets, together with UNICEF awareness campaigns, saves lives.
UNICEF provides
support to malaria control programmes in Africa and Asia which includes
the vital distribution of these nets.
We are ensuring children and families have access to early, effective, and affordable
treatment. Empowering families and communities through participation and improving
their
knowledge about how to prevent, recognise and treat malaria is also an important
part of our work.
Just one of many: Angeline’s story
Nine-year-old Angeline lives in a small village in Madagascar. She has been infected
with malaria several times in her short life. The last time she was dangerously
ill with a severe fever and could not got to school for five days. Angeline now
sleeps under a special insecticide-treated mosquito nets supplied by UNICEF designed
to protect children from malaria.
UNICEF and WSM
UNICEF is working with World Swim For Malaria (WSM) to provide long-lasting insecticidal
mosquito nets to provide protection against mosquitoes and other biting insects.
