African Medical and Research Foundation's (AMREF) mission is to improve the health of disadvantaged people in Africa as a means for them to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives. One of our Priority Intervention Areas (PIAs) is malaria.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Distribution

The 3,000 nets will be distributed in 45 villages in 5 locations of the Lokichogio division of Turkana district.

This is a marginalized part of the country where malaria is endemic. From Jul04-Jun05 there were 12,238 cases of malaria in a population of 45,000. More than 70% of malaria cases are in women and children. This distribution will be to these most vulnerable groups, pregnant women and children under five years.

The nets will be distributed through existing mobile clinics.

Locations

A distribution sometimes takes place in a number of locations. Each location may have its own pictures and video.

Survey status

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
