Malaria No More
Malaria is a disease that kills more than 1 million people annually, the majority of them children and mothers in sub-Saharan Africa. Its effects are particularly devastating in Zambia, where there are more than 3,000,000 incidents of malaria a year and 50,000 malaria-related deaths.
Malaria No More is partnering with Hedge Funds vs. Malaria, the Global Business Coalition on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC), and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)to purchase 500,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to protect 1,000,000 of the most vulnerable kids (2 kids can sleep under a bed net) in Zambia.
Bed nets will be purchased at a reduced rate from Vestergaard-Frandsen, the world’s largest producer of ITNs, with the first batch to be shipped to Zambia in May. Normally it would cost around $6 million to produce, ship, and distribute nets on this scale; Vestergaard has agreed to do it at a reduced rate bringing the cost down to around $2.5 million.
With the funds already raised by GBC, almost $ 2 million is in hand! Our goal is to raise $265,000 – the remaining funds necessary to complete the project and help to end the catastrophe of malaria in Zambia as soon as possible.
This effort will build on the momentum generated at the White House Summit on Malaria and demonstrate the power of the private and public sectors working together to collectively leverage resources and save lives. Hedge Funds vs. Malaria and our partners at Against Malaria are honored to be part of this collaborative effort.
