Project Mosquito is a collaborative project between BTC and POL and the Kenyan based Akado Medical Clinic. The project's focus is the alleviation of endemic malaria in the Suba District of Kenya. The clinic is provided with long lasting mosquito bed nets (LLINs) which the staff distributes to orphaned and vulnerable children and pregnant mothers in the Suba District.

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Malaria is endemic in Mbita Township where humidity favours mosquito breeding. It is the leading killer of children and pregnant mothers in the area, accounting for 35% of child deaths. These deaths are entirely preventable.

The level of insecticide treated nets in the area is very low or negligible.

Nets will be distributed in the densely populated township to:
1) the care givers of all children under 5 (the nets will be used by children)
2) pregnant mothers
3) the oldest child in child-headed households.

The Akado Medical Centres' health team and social workers will distribute the nets during routine health visits to the village/fishing slums and to schools.

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
