What people say about us

Independent charity evaluators

A number of independent charity evaluators review causes and individual charities and make their own giving recommendations.

GiveWell

Against Malaria Foundation: #1 ranked charity - 2nd year running

"Thousands of hours have gone into finding our top-rated charities. They're proven, cost-effective, underfunded, and outstanding.

Malaria is a major problem in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 1 million people -- mostly children -- die each year. Insecticide-treated bed nets prevent cases of and deaths from malaria and are relatively inexpensive -- about $5 per net. We believe that AMF is highly effective in expanding access to bed nets."

GiveWell conducts extensive research with a particularly high level of rigour and analysis and to date has spent hundreds of hours investigating AMF and our work including a distribution site visit to Africa.

Giving What We Can

Against Malaria Foundation: Joint #1 ranked charity - since Nov 2011

"Delivering insecticide-treated nets is a proven program with high cost-effectiveness and a strong track record. AMF has unusually low costs and unusually strong monitoring and evaluation of their programs."

Charity Listing websites

A number of organisations list charities and provide various levels of comment on transparency and performance. We include some of them here.

GuideStar

AMF listing on GuideStar website

Where we have been asked questions about AMF being listed on other website/s, as appropriate, we include status information here.

Charity Navigator

AMF is not currently listed on the Charity Navigator website. Charity Navigator has told us this is for three reasons:

  1. The latest AMF annual accounts (FY 2011) available to them show revenues under their threshold of $1m. (We have sent them our 2012 filing which shows revenues in excess of $2m)
  2. Charity Navigator has a backlog of 2,000 charities to review and AMF would join the list beneath that group.
  3. Charity Navigator do not review any charity with a fundraising cost of $0. AMF has a fundraising cost of $0 due to our structure and pro bono support. We have explained the reason for this line item being zero for AMF and asked if, with this understanding, this would not preclude AMF being reviewed. We are waiting for a response (as at Oct 2012)

CharityWatch

AMF is currently not listed on the Charity Watch website. This is because charities need to be recommended to them by their members. Charity Watch also acknowledge they have limited resources and are not able to review all the charities they might wish to.
