LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Distributed by  Red Cross    Red Cross

Malaria is endemic in Liberia. It is the single largest cause of illness in the country, especially among the under 5's and pregnant women.

10,000 nets will be distributed in 37 commmunities across 5 counties: Margibi 3,000; Bong 2,600, Nimba 1,640; Grand Bassa 2,400; Montserado 360.

This will be a selective distribution to under 5s and pregnant women. The distribution will be integrated into already existing Red Cross health care programmes allowing this to be carried out very efficiently.

Community elders will help Red Cross Volunteers to identify beneficiaries and nets will be handed out at distributions with a significant malaria and bednet use information and education component.

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
