What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The community of Yirimadjo of some 56,000 people lies to the south east of the capital Bamako. Malaria is a significant problem here: 50% of all medical cases are malaria related and 40% of children tested have malaria.

A household by household survey will establish [Update, 17Jun11: has now established] the exact number of nets needed to achieve universal coverage so that all sleeping spaces can be covered with a net. Significant malaria education messages, community leadership involvement and ongoing attention to net usage and monitoring of malaria cases are expected to lead to a significant decline in malaria prevalence in the community.
