Our major tool to control malaria is the ITN. The fishermen and farmers of the Wallalan Hamlets, and their families, were happy to play a major role in ITN development by collaborating on the first ITN trials in the 1980’s. Bednets have been part of Gambian life for over a century, but these trials showed that insecticide treatment greatly increases protection against malaria. Today the Gambian NMCP promotes ITN use and distributes LLIN to the most vulnerable but they want to start implementing their new policy of “Nets for All”.
