SmileGambia
SmileGambia is a UK based registered charity with long standing links with schools and individuals in West Africa and has had first hand experience of the devastating effects of malaria. We work in partnership with local communities.
SmileGambia has evolved from school partnerships dating back to 1993. Over that period a single school to school project has developed into a substantial number of schools linking individually and in clusters with schools in the Central River Division region of The Gambia. Partnership projects have ranged from: joint curriculum work; professional development workshops for teachers; support for clothing and milling machines; and building projects including classrooms and a nursery school. Fund raising to support these projects ranges from school events to individual sponsored activities to contributions following workshops and talks to schools and community groups.
Malaria in the Central River Region
Malaria is endemic in the region. Long-lasting insecticidal nets are a priority in the fight against malaria and there is terrific need. Vulnerable groups in Sami District and Jan Jan Bureh are some of the first to benefit from our activities. Other malaria prevention activities beyond net distribution will be supported by SmileGambia in the future.
Patrons of SmileGambia include Dr Mamo Jawla of the WHO who advises and provides excellent contact with the national malaria programme and health structures at local level.
