Merlin
Merlin is the only specialist UK charity which responds worldwide with vital health
care and medical relief for vulnerable people caught up in natural disasters, conflict,
disease and health system collapse.
What we do
Respond to natural disasters
Example: In the aftermath of the earthquake which devastated northern Pakistan in
2005, Merlin established five field clinics. Our teams worked through out the winter
in remote mountain villages to treat the injured and prevent the outbreak of diseases
such as pneumonia and diphtheria.
Help in times of conflict
Example: Merlin mobile clinics provided medical relief to thousands of people fleeing
their villages to escape violence in South Darfur, Sudan, in 2004.
Prevent disease
Example: In three districts of Kenya, Merlin is helping the Government create a
system of cross referral between HIV and TB services, helping patients to get earlier
diagnosis and better treatment. This model of comprehensive care is being copied
in many parts of Africa.
Rebuild health systems
Example: Following the destruction of Liberia’s health infrastructure in the civil
war, Merlin worked in six counties to provide health care, water and sanitation,
repair health facilities and train health staff for a population of 1.3 million
people.
