BioVision
BioVision is an independent Swiss foundation running specific projects that help
to alleviate poverty and disease and improve the livelihoods of people living in
extreme poverty. In Africa we concentrate on improving health with a special focus
on women and children. Several of our projects focus specifically on tackling malaria.
Malaria – Project Malindi
Malindi is a town on the coast of the Indian Ocean, about 100km north of Mombasa.
Malaria is a major health problem in Malindi. Every third patient in the local hospital
suffers from malaria.
We use an integrated approach to fighting malaria.
Removing and treating stagnant water
We remove or treatment stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Stagnant water is
removed by drainage, sometimes involving digging trenches or, if not removed, stagnant
water is treated with the environmentally friendly insecticide Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis
israelensis) which kills mosquitoes at the larvae stage.
Distributing LLINs
We also distribute long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets (LLINs) to protect
people from insect bites when they sleep at night.
We work closely with the local population to promote awareness and drive ownership
of what can be done to fight malaria.
Our goal is to reduce the number of mosquitoes by at least 90% and see a significant
reduction in the number of cases of malaria in the local population.
