World Vision/RAPIDS
World Vision
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with
children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential
by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
RAPIDS
Reaching HIV/AIDS Affected People with Integrated Development and Support (RAPIDS)
is a consortium of six NGO’s; World Vision (lead agency), Africare, CARE, CRS, Expanded
Church Response and The Salvation Army. Located in Zambia, this six year program
(2004-2010) is funded through investment by the U.S. Government under the
President’s Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS.
Through RAPIDS the various strengths and expertise of our partners are leveraged
to help each organization improve and expand their ability to care for orphans and
vulnerable children, people living with HIV/AIDS and provide youth livelihood and
abstinence promotion activities.
RAPIDS utilizes a unique, community-led, household approach that recognizes in high
HIV/AIDS prevalent countries like Zambia, care must be delivered at the household
level.
World Vision/RAPIDS Malaria Initiative
Preventing Malaria in HIV/AIDS Affected Households in Zambia with 500,000 long lasting
insecticide treated nets (LLIN’s)
The goal of this program is to reduce the malaria burden for orphans, vulnerable
children and households living with HIV/AIDS in 64 of Zambia’s 72 districts through
an integrated malaria initiative including a LLIN distribution program. Utilizing
RAPIDS’ 12,000 trained Zambian Volunteer Caregivers, LLIN’s will be delivered directly
to the household and will be monitored for proper usage.
In Zambia, malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children under
five representing 49.8% of all illness and 53.4% of all deaths. While every Zambian
is at risk of contracting a malaria infection, malaria is a disease that disproportionably
burdens vulnerable groups. It is a constant
threat to life for all who have not acquired immunity, such as children and pregnant
women and for those whose immunity has been compromised, such as people living with
HIV/AIDS. These vulnerable groups are more likely to suffer from the severe manifestations
of the disease such as cerebral malaria, severe anemia, and death.
