What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed in Kavango in the north of the country. Malaria is widely distributed here.

Kavango is characterised by high average temperatures, high rainfalls, high humidity and perennial rivers which are conducive to mosquito breeding and parasite development. During the past five years, in the north part of the country as a whole, 510,000 outpatient and 33,000 inpatient visits (from a population of 500,000) and 1,300 deaths due to malaria were registered.

The distribution of the nets will be to registered Home Based Care (HBC) clients most of whom are HIV positive, as well as pregnant and lactating mothers and children under 5. Kavango has 129 HBC beneficiaries and 160 registered orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) registered through HBC structures.

The Namibia Red Cross will distribute the nets via the Home Based Care (HBC) programme that involves field officers and Red Cross volunteers. The distribution will be accompanied by social mobilisation and awareness through radio and community meetings. Distributions will include demonstrations of how the nets are hung and used correctly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
