Amazon Promise is a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed to provide desperately needed medical care to remote, poverty-stricken populations living in the Upper Amazon Basin of Northeastern Peru. Since 1993, Amazon Promise has been providing essential medical services and education to residents of Iquitos and neighboring Belén, along with routine medical outreach and local training and education in 36 jungle villages located throughout Loreto, Peru's largest state.

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The Peruvian Amazon basin is a high risk malaria area. More than half of the reported 64,000 malaria cases in Peru in 2007 occurred in this region.

The nets will be distributed in a number of villages along the Upper Maranon River and its tributaries, including the villages of Napuruka, Sachapapa, Athulapa, Palestina, Belen, Ajachim, Chapis, Borja and Jerusalen, to achieve blanket coverage of all sleeping spaces.

Malaria education and correct net usage will be an important part of the distribution process.

Survey status

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
