LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Kavre is one of the highest risk malaria districts in the country. There is no existing LLIN use in the area. Five villages will be targeted: Jyamdi, Sathighar, Gairibisauna, Chandeni, Devbhumi.

The nets will be distributed to target households in collaboration with local community based organisations. The distribution will be coupled with comprehensive Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) activities in support of consistent net usage and the need to seek prompt care if malaria is suspected.

Post-distribution information

The distribution areas were generally located at common public venues in the VDC like schools and health posts. Each coupon that was given the previous day to the households, was verified and then the LLIN was given to the families. During the distribution key Behaviour Change Communication messages on Malaria and LLIN usage instructions were again stressed.

The Malaria season in Nepal ranges from April to September with the prevalence being highest during the Monsoon season of June to August. By end of June 2007, the distribution of all 10,000 LLINs was completed in the 10 VDCs selected for distribution of LLINs from Against Malaria.

The distribution of LLINs from AM helped to significantly close the gap in the number of LLINs available through the national program and the number of households in the malaria high risk districts. AM nets were distributed to households in the high risk VDCs of the district that did not receive LLINs through the national program due to shortage of LLINs.

The pictures shown above are part of the same Kavre District distribution, but taken in Sathighar.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
