LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Four parishes covering 19 villages in Kakoro sub-county will be the recipients of these nets. Nets will be distributed to all women and children under 15 in a close-to-blanket coverage.

Kakoro is a high-risk malaria area. In 2006, 144,000 of 331,649 hospital cases were for malaria.

The parishes covered by four related distributions of 6,180 nets are Kaitisya, Kadokolene, Kasajja and Kanginima. A parish typically consists of 3-7 villages.

Kadokolene's villages are: Bukomolo, Kadokolene, Bugolya, Kateryo, Dodoi and Kasupete.

Natiki Health Focus Organsiation will carry out the distribution. Distributions will occur at the parish level on specified days at specific meeting locations, usually local schools. Each parish distribution should take one week.

Malaria education and net use training are an integral part of the distribution. There will be a bednet demonstration and malaria information session covering what the nets are, why they are needed and how to use them. Net usage follow-up will aim to ensure complete and correct net use.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
