LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed in Adeknino Parish in Dokolo District. Each of 16 villages will receive sufficient nets to protect all inhabitants.

The villages included in this distribution: Alik, Awiidi, Ongei, Abarolam and Komora.

The area is highly endemic for malaria with perennial transmission. The bite rate for the area has been estimated at 5,324 infective bites PER PERSON per year and 79.3% of children between 1-9 years are infected with the malaria parasite.

Nearby Lira district has previously been targeted with free nets but Adeknino Parish was not included probably because it's remoteness makes LLIN distribution particularly challenging.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
