Survey status

Survey status

Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.

Distributed by YIF

Yaounde Initiative Foundation (YIF) is a not-for-profit organisation focusing on overcoming key practical constraints on socio-economic development in rural communities in Cameroon. The Foundation's goal is to improve the health and well being of communities through the control of insect vectors of human diseases, improved agricultural production and environmental protection.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will achieve blanket coverage of a 44-village area in the Sanaga Valley with a population of 13,500.

The area is malaria endemic with 40% of children under 5 and 33% of pregnant women suffering from malaria.

YIF is introducing Vector* Intervention Teams (VITs) that work with village leaders to successfully distribute LLINs. VITs are trained in each village with an important aspect of their training being knowledge of malaria and the correct use of nets.

*A vector is an insect or other organism that transmits infection. An example is a mosquito.

Post-distribution information

5000 LLITNs supplied by Against Malaria Foundation arrived on the 21st February 2008 for free distribution in 44 villages from 10 subdivisions of Cameroon situated in the forest region where malaria occurs throughout the year, the main vector of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum being Anopheles gambiae.Studies in these villages had shown the presence of more than 200 mosquitoes per night per house making it very difficult due to being disturbed by the mosquito bites throughout the night. The consequence of mosquito bites (and presence of black flies in the same area) throughout the year has led many to emigrate from this zone, resulting in a decline in agricultural productivity. The villagers were extremely thankful for the supply of LLITNs, so that they could now sleep. By adopting an area wide programme with all the family getting the protection of nets, it is hoped that the impact will be sufficient to have a significant impact on the incidence of malaria and that farming can be improved.
