The Mentawai Islands lie 100 miles off the coast of West Sumatra. 70,000 people live here in 203 hamlets (dusuns) in both coastal and forest jungle settings that are often extremely isolated. This isolation contributes significantly to poor health and poor health services.

Malaria is hyper-endemic here. Throughout the Mentawais 50% of all families lose at least one child to malaria, measles, tetanus and diarrhoea.

SurfAid’s pilot trials in 17 hamlets that received long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have shown a 75% reduction in malaria cases. Early evidence shows a ‘blanket coverage’ strategy can completely disrupt the malaria parasite cycle resulting in “near eradication”.

SurfAid’s Malaria Free Mentawai Project now aims to help achieve blanket coverage of the population via the distribution of a further 25,500 LLINs.
