LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Malaria is a major health problem in Liberia and consistently the top cause of morbidity (illness) at the 45 Merlin supported Ministry of Health (MoH) facilities.

Mosquito net use in Liberia is very low as nets are virtually impossible to access outside the capital Monrovia. Very few organisations are distributing nets.

Nets will be distributed as part of the primary health care (PHC) services Merlin is already implementing to support the MoH in Maryland and Sinoe counties. Seven related distributions will distribute 10,000 LLINs in total to protect 20,000+ mothers and children. [There is a need for a further 50,000 nets to protect another 100,000 people.]

Pregnant women attending ante-natal clinics (ANCs) will receive two nets each to cover themsleves and other children in the family. Community Health Workers (CHWs) will sensitise the catchment communites to malaria prevention. All households in the clinics' catchment areas will receive 3 nets.

Malaria education and the importance of preventing malaria through LLINs will be included in the daily health education talks at the clinics. Follow up visits by CHWs will ensure the correct use and maintenance of the nets.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was completed successfully as planned.

Pictures, video and a post-distribution report will be added here shortly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
