LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The West Nile is one of most disadvantaged parts of Uganda: 66% of residents live in poverty.

Training for VHTs was conducted in LOCOMGBO-YUMBE, UGANDA.

Health education over why net are important is just the beginning of the distribution process.

Effective information, education and behavior change activities will also ensure nets are sufficiently utilized.

Training was also conducted to assist communities in hanging up the nets in their houses.

Local council leaders (village heads) were involved to help ensure acceptability and legitimacy of the registration process (to reduce inflation of the registration figures) and to assist on the day of distribution.

Training took place to teach how to hang and use nets.

The trained team is ready for the distribution process.

The preliminary training and registration procedure are communicated clearly.

Malaria Consortium Uganda received a donation of 40,000 LLINs from Against Malaria Foundation (AMF).

Children under five are at the greatest risk of fatality from malaria.

Difficult to reach villages complicates the distribution process.

This mother and child have an opportunity for a healthy life under an LLIN net.

This region is the pilot for Universal Coverage - every registered household will receive one net for every bed.

These children are the primary beneficiaries of worldwide efforts.

After education on sleeping under nets, these children stand a better chance in life.

There were enough nets to distribute one per sleeping place for every household registered.

Malaria in this part of Uganda is highly endemic and transmission is year round with seasonal peaks.

Imagine the cracks and crevices mosquitoes can find in these huts.

Rudimentary houses like this one now have one net per sleeping area.

Nets like this have been retired

Universal coverage of nets will ensure widespread personal protection from malaria and reduce overall transmission locally.

All efforts have contributed to the education and distribution of 40,000 LLN.

Pre-distribution information

The West Nile region, in the north west corner of Uganda, is very badly affected by malaria.

All sleeping spaces in 57 villages in Moyo and Yumbe districts will be protected by these 40,000 nets in a series of related distributions. Approximatley 80,000 people will be protected.

Extensive malaria education will accompany the distribution of the nets and house-to-house post-distribution hang-up visits will ensure correct usage.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
