What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

This young girl was one of many in the Cloudy Bay Rural Region of Papua New Guinea to benefit from the recent LLIN distribution.

Children under age 5 are at highest risk from malaria.

Villagers in the Cloudy Bay Rural Region in Papua New Guinea’s Abau District	This mother carries home nets that will provide protection for her young child.	This distribution provided approximately 20,000 nets throughout the district.	A recipient smiles gratefully as she accepts her bed net.	The goal of this distribution was to achieve universal coverage.
A mother and her children walk home with their new protective bed nets.	The coastal climate of the Abau district gives it one of the highest incidences of malaria in the country.	One of the distribution sites in the Cloudy Bay region	Villagers line up to receive donated nets.	A worker sits in the truck filled with the many nets to be distributed.
A local man collects brand new LLINs that will help reduce his family’s risk of getting malaria.	A young child receives new bed nets.	Since this region has one of the highest rates of malaria in the country, net donation efforts are necessary to reduce instances of the disease.	Villagers received one net per sleeping space in their homes.	Record-keeping was necessary to ensure distribution ran smoothly.

Pre-distribution information

Malaria is endemic and a major health problem in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Abau is a coastal district and has one of the highest incidences of malaria in the country.

The distribution of 20,000 LLINs, in three related distributions, will achieve blanket coverage - all sleeping spaces covered - in some 40 villages. The three distribution areas will be Aroma rural, Cloudy Bay rural and Amazon Bay rural.

The distribution will be the responsibility of and coordinated by Rotarian groups in PNG working in collaboration with the PNG Dept of Health.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
