What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Volunteers in the Fatick region of Senegal registered recipients and handed out vouchers door-to-door.

Registration and voucher handout took place in conjuction with vitamin A and deworming treatments for children in Fatick.

7,600 bed nets were distributed throughout this part of the Fatick region in late June, 2009.

A donation point with enough nets so that all children under 5 will receive one.

Children under age 5 and pregnant women were the focus of this LLIN distribution throughout Senegal.	In 2006, 37% of all children under 5 in Senegal were afflicted by malaria. The goal of this distribution was to reduce instances of malaria in young, at-risk children.	One man receives a new LLIN while another presents a voucher.	Red Cross teams led the distribution in Senegal.	This mom takes a huge step to protect her young baby. The new net will greatly reduce the child's risk for malaria.
A volunteer opens a bag to give out a brand new bed net.	Horses helped transport packages of LLINs easily throughout the region.	Children and families wait with their vouchers at a distribution site.	Men carry packages of bed nets that will protect these young Senegalese children.	Many volunteers helped make this distribution effort possible.
A young boy receives a new LLIN at a distribution point.	A volunteer talks to a young mother about LLINs.	This mother received both a life-saving net and valuable education that will help her children.	A volunteer removes a new nets for a recipient and informs her about proper hanging in order to maximize the net's effectiveness at preventing malaria.	2 million LLINs were distributed throughout the nation, including 40,000 in the Fatick region.

Pre-distribution information

Senegal is particularly badly affected by malaria. A 2006 malaria survey indicated 37% of children under 5 had had an episode of fever or convulsions, clinical indicators for a case of malaria.

A two million net nationwide distribution campaign will take place in June 2009 to achieve protection of all children under 5 and pregnant women, those most vulnerable to malaria.

As part of that campaign 40,000 nets will be distributed in five areas in the Fatick region (Dioffior 11,000 nets; Foundiougne 7,600 nets and Guinguineo 11,200 nets) and the Thies region (Popenguine 7,200 nets and Joal Fadiouth 3,000 nets) where malaria is endemic and seasonal.

Red Cross teams will carry out the distribution of the 40,000 nets.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
