LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Approximately 28,000 nets were distributed to children under age 5 at various sites throughout the Lumpa Region of Sierra Leone.

The focus of this distribution, which provided 60,000 nets across the Freetown Peninsula, was to provide one net for each child under 5.

Children had a fingernail on their left hands painted to indicate that they received a net.

A Red Cross volunteer marks a young recipient’s fingernail.

Registration volunteers filled out recipients’ information for their records.

Net hanging demonstrations were held at each distribution site to show recipients how to hang nets properly.

Malaria is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Sierra Leone, accounting for 38.3% of all deaths among children under age 5 and 25.4% among the total population.

A 2007 study showed that only 55.6% of children under age 5 slept under an insecticide-treated net despite the fact that malaria is endemic in Sierra Leone

These children each received a donated bed net to help keep them safe from malaria.

When cared for and used properly, LLINs are effective at reducing the risk of malaria.

It is vital for people in this region to cover their sleeping spaces with LLINs because the many swamps make it a perfect breeding site for malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

There were 43 distribution sites set up throughout the Western Rural Area District, with 360 workers and volunteers to distribute nets.

A mother collects LLINs that will cover her children’s sleeping spaces.

All children from 0-59 months were targeted to receive a net.

There are approximately 25,000 children under age 5 in the Lumpa Region, and providing universal coverage will help reduce the number of malaria cases among this at-risk age group

Pre-distribution information

Sierra Leone is endemic for malaria.

40,000 nets will be distributed in a series of communities on the Freetown Peninsula in the west of the country to acheive complete coverage of under 5s. These nets are part of a major countrywide campaign targeting under 5s.

The communites are: Grafton, Hastings, Rogbangba, Lima Corner, John Thorpe, Waterloo and Kabba St, Cole Town and Bassa Town in Lumpa.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
