LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Hastings, Sierra Leone. Standing water contributes to the effective breeding of mosquitoes.

Remote rural region where malaria is endemic.

Net distribution targeted under 5's.

Education prior to distribution ensured that mothers of young children, under 5, would present themselves to receive a life saving net.

A sample net was hung at the distribution sight to demonstrate the proper hanging and use of the net.

Children under 5 are at the highest risk of fatality from malaria. This mother is taking the first step to providing her children a safe sleeping environment.

Nets were ripped open to discourage market resell.

Records are maintained to tally the receipt of nets to registered villagers.

Volunteers were trained to keep careful records on households that were to receive nets for under 5s.

Volunteers first educated mothers on how to hang the nets and properly install them over the sleeping area.

Once children were confirmed as 5 or under, volunteers marked their finger nail with a permanent marker.

This young baby does not understand that his life is safer for the receipt of the LLIN his mother has been given.

Nets over beds of children.

Many children and adults remain in need of a safe sleeping environment which would contribute to the eradication of malaria.
