LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Malaria is a big problem in The Gambia.

6 related distributions will take place in Wuli District in the far east of the country. It is among the most remote ('up-country') areas of The Gambia. Some 38,000 people live in 87 villages in the district.

The region has poor access to the regional and national health infrastructure and has not had a bednet distribution in at least the last few years.

Peace Corp Volunteers, working closely with the local health workers, villages leaders and the National Malaria Control Programme will coordinate the distribution.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was completed successfully as planned.

Pictures, video and a post-distribution report will be added here shortly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
