LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Zambia Operation Safety Net launch Oct 13 to 20 2009

Malaria is endemic in the Mbala District of Zambia. Nets made available by Against Malaria are distributed to remote regions by World Vision.

Young school girls waiting to hear why these nets have arrived to their village.

Young boys, curious onlookers, will soon be the recipients of a life saving LLIN made possible by the efforts of contributors to Against Malaria.

Children under 5 are most at risk of dying from malaria.

The village awaits their education on how to use the LLIN effectively.

Successful distribution begins with the involvement of all levels of governance in a village.

Each distribution began with a health presentation by caregivers or district health staff that highlighted the signs and symptoms of malaria, prevention methods, proper treatment, and proper net usage including a net demonstration.

Innocent young children waiting to understand what the trucks have brought them.

Demonstration of proper net usage.

Hopeful, young faces.

The health talks were reinforced by the malaria informational brochures translated into local languages that were also passed out with every net.

Caring mothers can now lay their infants safely under an LLIN.

Careful pre-planning for Universal coverage allowed the mass distribution to happen quickly.

Reading the malaria informational brochure to learn how to prevent her young baby from contracting malaria.

If a caregiver is unable to sign, ink pads were available for thumbprints.

Each pre-registered beneficiary collected the number of nets needed to reach the goal of 3 nets per household.

Caregivers were extremely efficient at organizing communities, dividing up supplies, translating educational materials and mobilizing individuals.

Working to ensure universal coverage, nets were distributed 3 to each household.

These children will be the beneficiaries of this coordinated effort to raise money for nets, purchase nets, and distribute to remote areas.

Serious concentration as this woman signs her name in order to receive the nets allocated to her household.

Large distances between remote villages creates distribution challenges.

Caregiver dedication to the project and their communities made the distribution a success.

Net demonstrations were performed at every mass distribution.

Careful records help village leaders ensure universal coverage of 3 nets per household is accomplished.

This region of Zambia contains large spread out districts.

Young people waiting to be educated on the use of LLIN's.

Educating the mothers of small children is vital to the net's success.

Including village headmen in certain areas helped to more effectively organize the communities.

Bundles of nets waiting for distribution.

Detailed explanation, along with a demonstration, ensures the effective use of the nets.

Proper coverage of all sleeping areas will assist the fight against malaria.

It was clear that the distribution was successful due to the inclusion of interested parties at every level.

These active young boys will soon have a safe place to sleep.

Pre-distribution information

133,350 nets will be distributed in 150 villages in 9 areas across Zambia to supplement those distributed in a recent campaign and to achieve universal coverage of all sleeping spaces in the villages.

Universal coverage has a significant impact on the local malaria-carrying mosquito population by starving them of a blood meal. If pregnant mosquitoes do not feed every 10-12 days, they die. The impact on the mosquito population and on village health can then be dramatic.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
