LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Approximately 90-100% of the population of Zambia is at high risk for contracting malaria.

In addition to providing mosquito nets, malaria education is also necessary.

Receiving donated nets is cause for smiling.

Trying out a new, properly hung mosquito net

When hung properly, mosquito nets can be effective in preventing against malaria.

Volunteers demonstrated how to hang nets and why it is necessary to use them.

Though instances of malaria decreased in Zambia in 2007, there were still 4.3 million diagnosed cases. Distributing LLINs will help decrease that number even further.

Community education included information on the cause and prevention of malaria and what to do when someone is sick with the disease.

Residents learn more about malaria and how to prevent it.

LLIN distribution at Moobola Health Centre

Malaria prevention is a community effort.

Malaria accounts for 50% of all diseases among those under age 5, making it especially important to provide nets for young children like this one.

Pre-distribution information

133,350 nets will be distributed in 150 villages in 9 areas across Zambia to supplement those distributed in a recent campaign and to achieve universal coverage of all sleeping spaces in the villages.

Universal coverage has a significant impact on the local malaria-carrying mosquito population by starving them of a blood meal. If pregnant mosquitoes do not feed every 10-12 days, they die. The impact on the mosquito population and on village health can then be dramatic.

Post-distribution information

The net distribution highlighted the advantages of how an integrated effort makes interventions such as the net distribution a success. It was clear that the distribution was successful due to the inclusion of interested parties at every level.
