LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Zambia Operation Safety Net launch Oct 13 to 20 2009

Pre-distribution information

133,350 nets will be distributed in 150 villages in 9 areas across Zambia to supplement those distributed in a recent campaign and to achieve universal coverage of all sleeping spaces in the villages.

Universal coverage has a significant impact on the local malaria-carrying mosquito population by starving them of a blood meal. If pregnant mosquitoes do not feed every 10-12 days, they die. The impact on the mosquito population and on village health can then be dramatic.

Post-distribution information

The net distribution highlighted the advantages of how an integrated effort makes interventions such as the net distribution a success. It was clear that the distribution was successful due to the inclusion of interested parties at every level.

Pictures and video will be added here shortly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
