LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

All distributions begin with Training of CSO supervisors.

This distribution covers the sub-counties of Moyo, Itula, and Romogi in the West Nile Region of Uganda.

The distribution in these counties is very spread out.

The local Civil Society Organisations work with the Community Medicine Distributors to manage the net distributions.

You can see one of the educational posters on the wall. These are written in the local languages.

Covering such wide-spread areas requires a lot of work.

Community Medicine Distributors from each village help verify recipients.

The number of nets needed is verified against the number available.

At this distribution site the nets were taken out of their blue covers.

Recipients sign and mark receipt of their nets with a fingerprint.

Distributions always require patience and teamwork.

This distribution is part of the new move towards Universal coverage.

Education and net hanging demonstrations are a part of every distribution.

Follow up support is also given through house to house visits, to ensure on-going education and understanding of the importance of proper net usage.

Local support is essential to verify recipients and for the process to run smoothly.

The process takes much time and effort!

Leaflets are handed out, along with the nets, in the native languages of the area- Lugbara and Medi.

The list is long.

These distributions are made on a parish level to try to centralize the process in these remote sub counties.

Over 40,000 nets are being distributed in these regions.

Education and interpersonal communication are critical to maintain awareness of the need for these bed nets.

These distributions are going a long way in filling the large gaps in net distribution for this area.

Pre-distribution information

The West Nile region, in the north west corner of Uganda, is very badly affected by malaria.

All sleeping spaces in 71 villages in Moyo and Yumbe districts will be covered by these 40,000 nets in a series of related distributions. Approximatley 80,000 people will be protected.

Extensive malaria education will accompany the distribution of the nets and house-to-house post-distribution hang-up visits will ensure correct usage.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
