LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

This distribution involved the Moyo and Yumbe districts in the West Nile region of Uganda.

Days before the distribution is scheduled training is given to volunteers and local leaders.

Involving local leaders helps ensure acceptability and legitimacy of the process.

Training for the actual distribution is a critical part of Malaria control.

Local Civil Society Organizations and The Malaria Consortium led this distribution.

Registration in MOYO. Documentation of each household is needed prior to distribution.

Stamped coupons were used to verify eligibility and help speed the process.

The distribution in this area covered some hard-to-reach villages spread out over a large area.

The exact population in this area is difficult to determine.

43,371 nets were given out over 22 distribution points.

Local volunteers are an integral part of the process.

The local preparations alone took over a week.

Getting everything organized took much time and effort.

This distribution is part of the work to provide Universal Coverage.

Every effort is made to ensure equality of distribution.

Lots of work goes into trying to determine who has nets already, who is using them, and how many still are needed.

As the nets arrive, the work continues.

The process involves more than the handing out of nets.

Education to support the use of the insecticidal nets is key.

Details about the nets

Demonstrations always accompany the distributions.

Education is essential to raise understanding about the importance of using the bed nets properly.

Written information is always a part of the process.

Answering questions and following up after the distribution helps ensure proper usage.

Volunteers will also do house to house visits to provide additional support and education.

Ready to head home and set up the net.

Pre-distribution information

The West Nile region, in the north west corner of Uganda, is very badly affected by malaria.

All sleeping spaces in 71 villages in Moyo and Yumbe districts will be covered by these 40,000 nets in a series of related distributions. Approximatley 80,000 people will be protected.

Extensive malaria education will accompany the distribution of the nets and house-to-house post-distribution hang-up visits will ensure correct usage.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
