LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The World Vision team arrive in the Kalomo region of Zambia.

The group arrive with 3,350 LLINs to be distributed in the area.

The volunteers work hard to move the nets into the Kalomo distribution hub for storage overnight.

In the morning, bundles of nets are transported to villages around the region.

The volunteers unload the mosquito nets at the first distribution point.

The local people who have gathered wait to collect their nets.

The names of the people are checked on the list of pre-assigned distribution destinations.

The nets are signed for upon collection so as to allow the caregivers to confirm that they have all been correctly distributed.

A fingerprint can also be used to confirm receipt of the nets.

One young girl stands with her family after they have received their nets.

Once the nets have been collected...

...they can be swiftly installed within people's homes.

The local community begin to arrive for the second distribution in the Mapatizya area of Kalomo.

The group watch as the nets are unloaded from their sacks...

...and are prepared for the distribution.

The group are taught about the importance of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets in preventing malaria.

They are also informed of the forthcoming distribution process.

Everyone listens attentively to the presentation.

Clear communication between the visiting caregivers and local leaders is key in ensuring the prolonged, correct usage of the LLINs.

One vulnerable, pregnant woman stands with the nets that are to protect her and her unborn child.

The caregivers visit every settlement in the area so as to ensure that blanket coverage is achieved.

The use of LLINs is the best way to prevent malaria.

The volunteers understand that the efficient distribution of the nets is key in saving lives.

The distribution takes place from a central desk.

One gentlemen collects enough nets to protect his entire household.

One mother collects the nets for her and her family.

The young are the most at risk from malaria, with one child under five dying every thirty seconds in Africa from the disease.

However, this distribution promises to deliver these children a healthier future.

The mosquito nets can remain 90-95% effective for up to five years.

The local community make their way home at the end of the day.

The success of this distribution brings with it the prospect of a happier future for the residents of Zambia.
