LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

The World Vision team arrive in Zambia to conduct a series of net distributions in impoverished rural communities.

The caregivers' trucks are laden with the 167,000 nets that are to be distributed in the region.

The large, local community begin to gather in the village.

The huge bundles of nets are unloaded from the truck...

...and are then moved to the distribution point.

The hard work and dedication of volunteers from both the local area and from abroad helps to make the project a success.

One of the team discusses the importance of the use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets in preventing malaria.

The group listen attentively to the advice that they are given.

A series of local volunteers stand ready to speak about key malaria-prevention topics.

Educating the local population allows the World Vision team to leave the area safe in the knowledge that the nets will be used effectively for years to come.

As the presentations come to a close, the central administration desk is arranged.

The volunteers prepare for the distribution...

...as homeowners rush to collect their nets.

One lady is given enough nets to protect her and her family.

The members of this community happily display their new nets and head home to install them.

The World Vision team move to a small, rural location to continue the distribution.

In order to achieve blanket coverage, the caregivers ensure that they visit every settlement in the area, regardless of its size.

One by one, people go to collect their nets from the central desk.

One man signs to acknowledge that he has received his pre-assigned nets.

Within Africa, youngsters under the age of five remain at the highest risk from malaria, with one child dying every thirty seconds from the disease.

Following the distribution, the caregivers confim with local leaders that the day has been a success.

The team visit the final village in this stage of the distribution in Zambia.

The remaining nets are carefully unloaded from the truck.

LLINs provide the best protection from malaria, remaining 90-95% effective for up to five years.

Parents learn about how the nets can save their lives, as well as the lives of their vulnerable children.

A lady goes up to the truck to collect her nets...

...signing to confirm that she has received her allocated number of nets...

...and supplying her fingerprint.

She can now take the nets home and install them in her home.

Once the distribution is complete, the community joyously show their appreciation.

The success of this mosquito net distribution provides all members of the local community with the prospect of a healthier, happier future.
