LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed to pregnant women and children under 5 in the Soba Aradi and Soba Silik Internally Displaced People's camps in Khartoum state.

The Soba Aradi IDP camp was chosen because the camp is in an irrigation area where malaria is focused and because there is low mosquito net coverage here.

A house to house campaign will be carried out coordinated by the Malaria Consortium and the State Malaria Control Programme (SMCP).

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
