LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

UPDATE: 24 Jul 2010
=============

20,000 nets are being shipped for distribution in 14 communities: four spontaneous settlements in Port au Prince, seven sites in the Central Plateau and three sites in the Artibonite region of Haiti.

As a result of the earthquake on 12 Jan 2010, there was a large population movement out of Port au Prince. Over 200,000 people have since relocated to the Central Plateau and Artibonite regions. In addition, Partners in Health (PIH) and Zanmi Lasante (ZL) operate four clinics at four spotaneous settlements within the city of Port au Prince.

Malaria is a serious risk in these locations and malaria case rates have increased markedly since the eartquake. 20,000 nets will protect approximately 40,000 people most at risk.

UPDATE: 04 Jun 2010
==============

There are currently 800,000 LLINs in Haiti and the need is for a least 1 million. Some nets were sent to Haiti soon after the earthquake but the majority arrived some months later as distributing nets was not an immediate post-earthquake priority. There will be a series of major net distributions in the coming several months and we are liaising with potential distribution partners for the 20,000 nets we will send. It is possible the nets will be shipped in the next month but we will be guided by the organisation coordinating health activities in Haiti and those organisations on the ground delivering aid.

13 Jan 2010
========

The immediate needs in Haiti are search and rescue teams and medical aid.

In the near to medium term, malaria, already a problem in Haiti, is likely to increase significantly due to there being little to stop transmission. News media are quoting teams in Haiti as already concerned about a number of diseases including malaria.

The exact distribution location and timing will be determined in the coming days, weeks and months through liaising with the relevant authorities and partners. As soon as that information is available it will be added here.

Post-distribution information

Expected Dec 2010.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
