LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

13,700 nets will be distributed in a series of related sub-distributions in approximately 25 villages to achieve blanket (or near-blanket) coverage of all sleeping spaces. Universal coverage, as this is called, is shown to have a dramatic impact on malaria transmission rates as it starves the malaria-carrying mosquitoes of a blood meal and leads to a significant decline in their population.

The distribution complements a national malaria control programme distribution to under 5s and pregnant women taking place a few months earlier. The national campaign focuses just on its target group due to funding constraints.

Peace Corps volunteers will be leading these well coordinated and integrated distributions, including the malaria education element, and manging post-distribution follow up.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
