Surveys take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.

Distributed by Malaria Consortium

The Malaria Consortium is one of the few not-for-profit organisations dedicated to combating malaria. More than 90% of our resources are based in Africa. We support Ministries of Health and partners in over twenty African and Asian countries through offices in Uganda, Mozambique, Sudan, Zambia and Ethiopia.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Nets will be distributed in 5 parishes in Masindi and Buliisa in the mid-west of Uganda. The parishes are Kaduku and Masindi Port in Masindi and Butyaba, Kihunge and Biiso in Buliisa.

Malaria in this part of Uganda is highly endemic, with year round transmission and seasonal peaks. These two sub-counties are yet to be served with any LLIN distributions. Net usage is very low; the most recent data available (2003) shows only 6% of under 5's sleep under a net in the region.

LLINs will be distributed to every houshold in these districts with a pregnant woman or children under 5. WSM nets will allow full coverage of vulnerable groups.

Distribution sites will be set up at parish level with commuity leaders very much involved in the pre-, post- and distribution activity itself.
