LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Gai is a rural area with a population of 6,485 people. Malaria is a significant problem here. Many at risk individuals cannot afford nets.

A blanket coverage of nets will maximize the impact of the LLINs, as the community-wide effect of reducing the local mosquito population, thus protecting non-net users as well, only applies in cases of dense LLIN coverage. This method is modelled on the practices employed and recommended by entomologits at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine distributing nets in Tanzania.

Akamba Aid Fund are a small charity targeting poor families in this area. AMREF and the two local clinics will help with distribution.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
