LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

Nets will be distributed to the Njemps people in the Great Rift Valley region between Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria. This is a high risk malaria region made up of a lowland region that holds water during the rainy season. The villages around Marigat, Loiminange and Lorwok will be the three target areas.

The Njemps people live in villages and small housing clusters and do not have easy access to hospitals and clinics in distant towns. They are farmers, are very poor and cannot afford nets even at subsidised prices.

Distribution will be at least one net to as many Njemps homes as possible. The distribution will be carried out by local HisNets staff, fluent in Swahili, with help from a team of 15 volunteers and with local Njemps translators assisting where necessary. Education about malaria and proper use of the nets will be an important part of the distribution activity.

Photographs and video will document the distribution and a post-distribution assessment to gauge net hang up and usage will take place six weeks later via unanounced visits.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was completed successfully as planned.

A post-distribution report will be added here shortly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
