What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed to ten kebeles (villlages) in Awi zone, Ankesha district.

This is a high risk malaria area with a UNICEF Community Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (CIMCI) programme but has yet to receive LLINs. The villages are in a lowland area with endemic malaria.

Each household has on average 5 family members and on average will receive 2 nets. The nets will be distributed to households through door to door distribution using health and community resource workers.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
