LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Discussion with community on net use

...by a Red Cross HBC volunteer

These discussions pre distribution are very important

The sessions are fun and there's plenty of opportunity to ask questions

Distributing the nets in groups

...and via house to house visits in villages

An installed net for a pregnant mother

...and a child already under a net for the first time in her life.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed in the villages of Adeama, Metrhara, Welenchiti and Jima. The malaria mortality rate in children is high in these regions. 60% of reported visits to the health services are due to malaria. Distribution will prioritize Persons Living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA), pregnant women and <5 children.

The nets will be distributed by The Ethiopian Red Cross (ERC). Red Cross Volunteers will carry out the distribution as part of existing home based care (HBC) visits which means no additional distribution costs once the ERC receives the nets. Nets will be distributed by HBC facilitators trained to promote and demonstrate how to use the nets and twice monthly home visits will allow monitoring of net usage.

Post-distribution information

The nets were succesfully distributed in one go. Beneficiaries were given basic training on the use of bed nets and related issues. Post distribution follow up will be carried out by HBC volunteers to assess and ensure correct net usage.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
