Distributed by Red Cross

Our headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, from where we support members with technical, material, human, and financial support to better respond to emergencies and to major health problems.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The distribution will be in four areas, Chinotimba B, Chinotimba clinic, Mkhosana A and Mkhosana B, to people living with HIV/ AIDS, to children under 5 years and to pregnant women. 60% of deaths in these areas are due to malaria.

The distribution will be carried out by the Zimbabwe Red Cross through the Home Based Care (HBC) system already in place. Distributions will be integrated into already planned activities and will therefore reach vulnerable people very efficiently.

Post-distribution information

The distribution to children, mothers, orphans and people living with HIV Aids started at 8am. 4,000 people attended. From Bernard, one recipient; 'I am very happy to receive a mosquito net. It will go a long way in reducing mosquito bites, which reduces my chances of suffering from malaria.' The Red Cross: 'Not all could receive nets but the distribution was a turning point. There is now a high demand for nets in the area. Other community members are asking for them.'
