Distributed by Red Cross

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is a network of 183 National Societies worldwide. Our headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, from where we support members with technical, material, human, and financial support to better respond to emergencies and to major health problems.

LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed in the following rural locations:
1. Lundu area, Blantyre in the Southern region, 750 LLINs amongst 25 villages
- 210 nets will go to 210 HBC clients and 540 will go to under 5s
2. Mduwa area, Mchinji, Central region, 750 LLINs, 50 villages
- 300 HBC clients, 50 orphans on education support, 400 under 5s
3. Mwansambo area, Nkhotakota, Central region, 750 LLINs, 30 villages
- 200 nets to 200 HBC clients, 550 to 550 CBCC under 5s
4. Mankhambira area, Nkhatabay, Northern region, 750 LLINs, 25 villages
- 150 nets to 150 HBC clients, 600 to 600 CBCC children

All the districts are high risk malaria areas. Nkhatabay and Nkhotakota are located along Lake Malawi which provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Blantyre and Mchinji have numerous rivers and swamps. In all 4 locations, malaria accounts for 40% of under 5 deaths. In these areas mosquito net coverage is below the current national level of 43%. Blantyre has an ITN usage rate of 33% of the households; Mchinji 30%; Nkhotakota 34% and Nkhatabay 35% so there is a significant coverage gap still to be closed.

The Malawi Red Cross will carry out the distribution via visits already scheduled as part of the Home Based Care (HBC) volunteer-led programme. We currently do not have the money to protect all those we could.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was planned and complete between 18th-26th August 2006 in all six districts. These are the present HIV/AIDS program districts which include Nkhatabay in the north, Nkhotakota and Nchinji in the center and Chiradzulu, Blantyre and Mwanza in the south. MRCS staff and volunteers in partnership with District Health and Social Welfare personnel supervised by a national team took part in the distribution. The distribution was attended by both national and district society officials, government officials, local traditional leaders and media. During the distribution in Chiradzulu district an independent TV crew from Iceland was present. The information Officer form the MRCS took pictures of all the distributions. The distribution process was a complete success. Thank you to all the volunteers and other stakeholders who assisted in one way or another and for taking an active part in the distribution process. The HIV/AIDS volunteers will provide the necessary follow up on net usage and care with the communities. Training in these areas will be provided by the National Malaria Control Program of MRCS.
