LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

The nets will be distributed in Sega, a sub location in Ukwala Division, Siaya District of Nyanza Province.

Sega is in the lowlands with a hot wet climate. These conditions are conducive to mosquito breeding. The malaria case rate is high with over 65% of morbidity (illness) and mortality, especially in infants, due to malaria. 50% of children who present with anaemia and convulsions in the hospitals are due to malaria.

Sega: Distribution will focus on the 185 HIV infected people and the 1,440 pregnant women and 1,350 under 5 year olds covered by our home based care (HBC) programme. Other vulnerable people in the village will be identified by the volunteers in consultation with the community committee. The LLINs will not cover this whole population during this distribution so the most vulnerable will be given priority. 1 LLIN per HIV+ person, and 1 LLIN for families with <5 yrs and pregnant women.

The Kenya Red Cross is already implementing other programmes in this area so structures are in place for ease of LLIN distribution, follow up and monitoring.

Post-distribution information

1,500 nets have been successfully distributed in Sega, Siaya by Red Cross staff and volunteers: 450 to Home Based Care (HBC) clients, 565 to children under 5, 35 to pregnant mothers and 450 to other vulnerable persons (OVC).

Prior to the distribution, volunteers were given net hanging instruction and they in turn conducted health talks with recipients. Follow up will occur during routine home visits to ensure consistent and proper use of the nets. Beneficiaries will also be randomly selected to give feedback on their experience using the nets.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
