LLINs

What is a Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN)?

An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide.

The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is 'slow released' over a 4-5 year period. Hence 'long lasting'.

Pre-distribution information

All children under 5 in the 9 health areas of Bafut health district will be protected as a result of this distribution. In total, 60 multicultural communities will benefit.

The nine health districts are: Akofunguba, Buwe-Bukari, Mambu, Manji, Mankanikong, Mbakong, Mforya, Mundum and Nsem.

The Bafut area, 20kms northeast of the provincial capital of Bamenda, is a high risk malaria area with year-round transmission. A recent study reported a malaria morbidity (illness) rate amongst under 5's of 54%.

The extreme poverty of the people in the area means they cannot afford nets, even if they were available at subsidized rates.

The under 5's will be the focus of this distribution as they are the most at-risk group due to low immunity.

Post-distribution information

The distribution was completed successfully as planned.

A post-distribution report will be added here shortly.

Follow-up surveys

These take place 6, 18, 30 and 42 months post-distribution. A survey of 50 households provides sample information on what proportion of nets continue to be used, if they are used correctly and the state of the nets.
